Firebird, Soho
I recently went to a team lunch, with Julian and Celine, at Firebird in Soho. We opted to share small plates, not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a great way to sample most of what’s on offer. The menu was thoughtfully curated, featuring fresh, seasonal produce.
We began with a few appetisers, including whipped cod’s roe, cep rarebit with pickled girolles, paired with a clarified mezcal margarita, a unique twist on the classic, as we toasted to the end of a busy yet successful week.
For starters, we enjoyed tuna tartare with ponzu and cured egg yolk, as well as sheftalia kebab with pickled fennel and yoghurt, before finishing with wild Welsh mussels and smoked braised lamb. This all left us so full that we couldn’t even make it to dessert, a rarity for us.
The menu changes throughout the year, but as autumn had just begun, the dishes struck a perfect balance between fresh and light, and warm and comforting. If you’re looking for a slightly under-the-radar modern Mediterranean spot, I’d highly recommend it.
